Polycystic ovarian syndrome (polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS) is a syndrome in which the ovaries are enlarged and have several fluid-filled sacs or cysts. These cysts may look like a string of pearls or a pearl necklace, and a woman can develop one cyst or many cysts. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a leading cause of infertility and is the most common reproductive syndrome in women of childbearing age.

| Description: |
The recognition that insulin resistance has a central role in polycystic ovary syndrome has led to new approaches to treatment. While clinical presentations may still be managed symptomatically, there is increasing interest in insulin sensitisers including metformin. Drug treatments do not displace the management of behavioural risk factors to achieve weight loss in women who are overweight or obese. Weight loss leads to improvement in symptoms, and other long-term health benefits.

Some women develop lots of cysts on their ovaries. If this causes abnormal periods, infertility, acne and excessive hair growth, it is called polycystic ovary syndrome. Many women with polycystic ovary syndrome are overweight. Losing weight is therefore an essential part of treatment. If weight loss does not make the periods regular, an oral contraceptive pill can be used.
